ASK A PLUMBER

Why is the gas company requiring me to get a gas pressure test from a licensed plumber?

Gas pressure tests are required due to gas service being eliminated for a certain period of time, thus removal of the meter is required.  During that time the integrity of the gas system in the house could have changed with or without your knowledge (deteroration of pipes, vandalization, or removal of appliances).  The gas service to the house and inside the house must be presurized to maintain a certain level of pressure and then inspected by the city inspector to wittness the gauge.  If the gauge does not hold the specific pressure there is a gas leak in the system.  At that point the leaks must be determined and fixed, the process continues with repressuring the line until all the repairs are completed and the line is holding the pressure.  After the inspection has passed the city turns the property address over to the gas company, the gas company then comes out and sets the meter (deposits and balances typically must be paid).  This process can take a couple days at the least to get accomplished.  Make sure you alot for the time required to make repairs, schedule inspections and have the gas company return with the meter.
